Houndstooth is a classic print that never goes out of style; using this tutorial, you can learn how to get this staple pattern on your nails!
You will need:
- “square colour” I’ve used W7 Black
- “line colour” I’ve used W7 White
- top coat
- base coat
- medium length striping brush
- small paint brush (don’t use a “best” brush as it will need to be dipped in acetone and this will likely damage a delicate paint brush)
Put on a layer of base coat and allow it to dry then paint your nails with a solid covering of your “square colour”. I used two coats of W7 Black for opacity.
Once your base colour is dry, add vertical stripes of your “line colour” using the medium length striping brush. Try to keep your lines as equidistant as possible – you’ll need squares for your design to tessellate properly.
Add horizontal lines, remembering to keep them the same distance apart as the vertical lines.
You’re now left with a series of black squares on a white background. Using the small paintbrush, add a vertical line, starting at the top left corner of each square and stopping halfway to the edge of the next square.
Again, using the small paint brush, add a horizontal line, starting at the top left corner of each square and stopping halfway to the edge of the next square.
Add a line at a 45˚ angle from the tip of each vertical and horizontal line back to the square they originated from and fill in the little triangle produced.
Add a line at a 45˚ angle starting from the diagonal-facing corners of each square and stopping just before the opposite corner of the square below.
Et voila! Your very own timeless nails!
